Nervous About Your First Tattoo? Here’s Exactly What to Expect

Getting your first tattoo is a big deal. Even if the design is small, the decision rarely is. And it's completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and anxiety walking through the door for the first time. We see it every day, and we love it every single time.
At Old Crow, we've been welcoming first-timers since 2008. We know that the unknown is usually what makes people most nervous, so we want to take that away. Here is exactly what happens when you come in for your first tattoo with us.
Before You Arrive: What to Bring
Your valid photo ID (you'll need it to fill out our consent form)
Any reference images you have (phone is fine)
Comfortable, loose clothing that gives easy access to the area being tattooed
A snack or a meal beforehand (tattooing on an empty stomach isn't fun)
A friend for moral support if that helps you feel good (always welcome)
Your Visit, Step by Step
1. You Walk In and Feel Welcome
The first thing that happens when you arrive at Old Crow is that your artist greets you. Not a receptionist, not a clipboard. Your actual artist. We'll offer you tea or a snack, and take a moment to just be with you before anything else happens. There's no rush. We want you to feel at home.
Good to know: The shop has a warm, gallery-like energy. It's not intimidating. We've worked hard to make it feel that way on purpose.
2. The Consent Form
You'll be asked to fill out a consent form. This is standard for all tattoo appointments and just takes a few minutes. Make sure to bring your valid photo ID, as we'll need it for this step. It's not bureaucratic for the sake of it. Consent is genuinely at the heart of how we operate here.
3. Reviewing the Design Together
Your artist will walk you through the design, printed out at the exact size it will be on your body. You'll look at it together, talk about placement, and make sure everything feels right. This is a real conversation, not a formality. If something needs to be adjusted, this is the moment.
Good to know: Don't be shy here. Your artist has done this hundreds of times and genuinely wants to hear your thoughts. There are no stupid questions.
4. The Stencil and the Enthusiastic Yes
Once the design is approved, your artist will apply a stencil to your skin: a temporary transfer that shows exactly where the tattoo will go. Then something important happens: you get time to look at it. In the mirror, from different angles, for as long as you need.
We call it the enthusiastic yes. We're not looking for "I guess that's fine." We're looking for the moment when you feel genuinely excited, no hesitation, no nagging feeling that something's off. If it's not there yet, we keep adjusting until it is. Your comfort and certainty matter more than our schedule.
"We are not looking for 'I guess that's fine.' We want your full, excited, no-doubt-in-my-mind yes."
5. Getting Tattooed
Once you're fully ready, your artist will have you lie down on our comfortable massage-style table, get everything set up, and begin. The table is designed to keep you relaxed and well-supported, which is especially important for longer sessions.
Yes, tattoos are painful. There's no getting around that, and we'll never pretend otherwise (that's actually a topic for a whole separate post). But our artists are experienced at reading how you're feeling and keeping the energy in the room calm. You are always encouraged to speak up if you need a moment, need to breathe, or need a break. Your body, your pace.
Good to know: Communicate openly with your artist throughout. If something hurts more than expected, say so. If you feel lightheaded, say so. We've seen it all and we'll take care of you.
6. The Reveal
When the tattoo is finished, your artist will clean the skin and bring you to the mirror. This is one of our favorite moments: watching someone see their new tattoo for the first time. Take it in. It's yours.
Your artist may ask if they can take a photo to share on their Instagram. This is always with your consent and we always do our best to avoid capturing your face. If you'd prefer not to have any photos shared online, just say so. No explanation needed and absolutely no hard feelings.
7. Wrapping Up and Aftercare
Your artist will wrap your tattoo before you leave. How they wrap it depends on a few things: the size of the piece, how much ink was used, whether it's fine line or heavy fill, and how your skin tends to react. There are two main options:
Second Skin: An adhesive bandage that stays on 3-7 days, as long as there's no leaking outside the edges. Low maintenance and great for healing.
Saran Wrap: Traditional wrap. You'll clean the tattoo when you get home or the following morning, then follow the aftercare sheet instructions.
You'll leave with a printed aftercare sheet that walks you through everything. And you're always welcome to text the shop or email your artist directly if anything comes up during healing: questions, concerns, or just wanting to share how it's looking. We're here.
Good to know: Aftercare varies based on your skin sensitivity, tattoo size, ink density, and whether you have any adhesive sensitivities. Your artist will give you personalized guidance before you leave.
A Note on Nerves
If you're anxious, you're in good company. Almost everyone who gets their first tattoo at Old Crow walks in with butterflies. What we've found, again and again, is that the anxiety almost always comes from not knowing what to expect. And once you're here, once you've met your artist and had a cup of tea and seen the design on your skin, it softens into something that feels a lot more like excitement.
We've built this shop to be a place where you can take your time, ask every question, and feel genuinely held through the process. You don't have to perform confidence you don't feel. You don't have to pretend it doesn't hurt. You don't have to apologize for anything.
You just have to show up. We'll take care of the rest.
